Inside Mohamad Kashfi Zulkufli’s Rise Through Malaysian Fashion

For Mohamad Kashfi Zulkufli, fashion has never been limited to creating beautiful clothes. His career has gradually become a story about emotion, identity, resilience and the desire to build something that can survive beyond the person who created it.

The Malaysian fashion designer has spent more than a decade developing his creative identity while moving through different areas of the industry. Today, he is known not only for couture and menswear but also for a design language that uses volume, structure, dramatic silhouettes and detailed craftsmanship.

Recent recognition has placed his journey under an even brighter spotlight. Kashfi received the Influential Fashion Designer Icon Award at the BISA Awards 2026, following the Showcase Excellence Designer Award at MFW 2025 and the Most Creative Designer recognition at MGM 2024.

Yet his story becomes more interesting when the attention moves away from the trophies. Behind those achievements is a designer who has experienced doubt, pressure, changing expectations and the constant challenge of remaining relevant in an industry built around change.

A Creative Journey That Started Before The Recognition

Kashfi’s professional path began long before major awards started appearing beside his name.

After studying Performing Arts and Creative Technology at UiTM and gaining further fashion education through the International Academy of Fashion and Design, he entered the industry through practical creative work.

His early career included working as an assistant fashion designer and contributing to theatre costume production. He later gained styling experience in Malaysian television, giving him exposure to another side of visual storytelling.

These experiences helped develop a perspective that went beyond simply designing garments.

When the Kashfi Zulkufli label was established in 2012, he began creating a clearer identity around his own name. By 2013, he had represented Malaysia through the Young Designers Arena at Asian Fashion Week with the Lady of Mia collection.

It was an early sign that his ambitions were extending beyond a small personal label.

Finding His Own Language In Fashion

Fashion designers are often challenged to answer one difficult question. What makes their work immediately recognisable?

For Kashfi, that identity developed through drama and character.

His designs have become associated with structured forms, folding, flare, volume and carefully created details. Instead of treating clothing as a simple product, he approaches a collection as something capable of expressing emotion and personality.

His philosophy also moves away from the idea that fashion should only create beauty. A central message attached to his brand is the belief that design should create happiness.

That distinction has shaped how Kashfi views his work.

A beautiful garment can attract attention, but an emotionally meaningful garment may create a stronger relationship between the designer and the person wearing it. This approach has allowed his brand to explore bridal couture, occasion wear, menswear and other creative categories while maintaining a recognisable personality.

The Struggle Behind A Polished Fashion Career

The public usually sees fashion after the difficult work has finished.

They see models walking under bright lights, carefully styled photographs, elaborate garments and award ceremonies. They rarely see the uncertainty that exists before those moments.

Kashfi has openly spoken about periods of pressure, sacrifice and self doubt throughout his career. There were moments when continuing was difficult, but those experiences became part of his development both as a designer and as an individual.

Running a creative business adds another layer to that challenge.

A designer must protect artistic identity while understanding customers, managing a team and responding to a market that constantly changes. Remaining comfortable with the same ideas can quickly become a weakness.

For Kashfi, leaving his comfort zone and understanding what clients genuinely want have become essential parts of maintaining the brand.

His journey shows that longevity in fashion is not created through one successful collection. It comes from adapting without completely losing the identity that made people notice the work in the first place.

Three Major Awards Mark A New Chapter

The period from 2024 to 2026 has brought significant recognition for Kashfi Zulkufli.

His Most Creative Designer recognition at MGM 2024 highlighted the creativity that had become central to his reputation.

That momentum continued with the Showcase Excellence Designer Award connected with Malaysia Fashion Week 2025, where his work continued to reach audiences through prominent fashion platforms.

In 2026, another major milestone arrived when he received the Influential Fashion Designer Icon Award at the Bisnes Sinar Awards.

For Kashfi, that recognition carried emotional meaning because it represented years of work rather than a single successful moment.

Fourteen years of building a name included uncertainty, long working hours, experimentation and the responsibility of developing a company around a personal creative identity.

The awards therefore tell only one part of the story. Their greater importance comes from what they represent about the years behind them.

Satu Legasi Turns His Journey Into A Story

One of the most important recent developments in Kashfi’s career came through Satu Legasi, presented during The Kuala Lumpur Men’s Fashion Week 2026.

Rather than presenting another conventional runway collection, the production was designed as a fashion theatre experience celebrating more than 14 years of his creative journey.

The presentation featured 28 menswear looks, with different collections representing chapters of his development.

Malaysian cultural influences were combined with contemporary design and detailed craftsmanship, creating a show that looked backward at his journey while also communicating where the brand wants to go next.

Satu Legasi carried an important message.

Kashfi no longer wants the brand to exist only because he personally stands behind it. His ambition is to develop an identity, structure and creative philosophy strong enough to continue into the future.

Building Something Bigger Than One Designer

This idea of legacy represents a significant change in Kashfi’s professional journey.

After years of establishing himself as a designer, his attention is increasingly moving toward building an organisation and creating opportunities for others.

He has spoken about the possibility of opening space for younger designers to develop their creativity under the Kashfi Zulkufli umbrella.

The idea remains part of a developing vision, but it reveals how his definition of success is evolving.

His plans have also included potential business expansion into Singapore, Johor Bahru and Brunei, suggesting that the next stage of the brand may involve reaching wider regional audiences.

For a designer who began by building his own creative identity, creating a platform that can eventually support other talent would represent another form of achievement.

Mohamad Kashfi Zulkufli Is Still Designing His Future

Kashfi Zulkufli’s journey offers an important lesson for anyone pursuing a creative career.

Recognition rarely arrives at the beginning. A personal style takes years to develop, and meaningful success often comes after periods when confidence is tested.

His recent awards may represent some of the most visible moments of his career, but the more powerful story is the progression behind them.

From assisting with costume design and developing his skills in styling to creating his own label, presenting collections and eventually thinking about legacy, Kashfi has continued to expand what his name represents.

The next chapter appears increasingly focused on longevity.

For Mohamad Kashfi Zulkufli, the goal is no longer simply to design another memorable collection. It is to build a fashion identity with enough emotion, character and purpose to continue inspiring people long after the applause from one runway has ended.
