A Journey That Began With Curiosity

Long before his name became associated with major Egyptian films, international productions and award winning cinema, Ahmed Hafez was simply fascinated by the relationship between images and sound.

Born and raised in Cairo, Ahmed discovered film editing at a remarkably young age. His interest began during his teenage years when he encountered the world of post production and became curious about what happened behind the scenes after filming ended.

That curiosity gradually developed into a profession.

According to his professional biography, Ahmed began working in editing while still in school, starting with commercials and music videos before moving into feature films. His early experience came at a time when the industry was transitioning from traditional linear editing systems to modern computer based workflows.

Rather than treating these technological changes as obstacles, Ahmed embraced them as opportunities to learn and evolve.

That mindset would become an important part of his career.

From Commercials to Egyptian Cinema

Ahmed’s professional path began with advertising, where he learned how to communicate ideas within limited time and through carefully selected images.

His first credited editing work included an Axe television commercial directed by Hadi El Bagoury in 1998. Years of working on commercials and music videos eventually opened the door to feature filmmaking.

His early film credits included projects such as Al Rahina, 45 Days, El Shabah, Masgoon Transit and Al Maslaha.

Each project offered another lesson in storytelling.

For Ahmed, editing was never simply about cutting scenes together. It was about understanding rhythm, emotion, character and the moment when a story needs to move forward or pause.

That approach helped him develop a reputation for bringing structure and emotional intensity to complex stories.

As his experience grew, Ahmed became involved with some of the most recognizable productions in Egyptian cinema.

His collaborations with director Marwan Hamed and writer Ahmed Mourad became particularly significant. The partnership produced films including The Blue Elephant, The Originals, Diamond Dust and Kira & El Gin.

The Blue Elephant became an important milestone in Ahmed’s career, giving him the opportunity to experiment with the editing language of a psychological thriller.

Diamond Dust later became one of the projects he particularly valued for its storytelling style, while his work across several productions earned him recognition from both Egyptian and international film institutions.

His credits also expanded into different genres, demonstrating that his creative approach was not restricted to one particular type of story.

The Film That Took Ahmed to Cannes

One of the defining moments of Ahmed’s career came with Clash, directed by Mohamed Diab.

The 2016 film premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival, placing Ahmed’s editing work before an international film audience.

The project was particularly demanding because the story unfolds inside a police truck carrying people from opposing sides of Egypt’s political unrest. The confined setting required precise control over pacing, movement and character relationships.

Ahmed’s editing became an important part of the film’s intensity.

His work on Clash earned him multiple awards, including recognition at the Carthage Film Festival, the Cairo Film Society Festival and the Egyptian National Film Festival.

The experience also demonstrated how an Egyptian editor could contribute to cinema that travelled far beyond the country’s borders.

Ahmed Hafez Building an International Reputation

Ahmed’s career continued to move between Egyptian cinema, regional productions and international projects.

He worked on films such as Inshallah a Boy, a critically acclaimed Jordanian production that became the country’s first film to premiere at Cannes. The film later represented Jordan in the international awards circuit and collected recognition at major festivals.

Another important chapter came when Ahmed joined the editing team of Marvel’s Moon Knight.

Directed in part by Egyptian filmmaker Mohamed Diab, the Disney series represented a major international opportunity. Ahmed worked on episodes three and four, bringing his experience from Arab cinema into a global franchise.

The project also reflected something larger about his career.

Ahmed had spent decades developing his craft within Egypt, but his work was now reaching audiences around the world.

The Challenge Behind International Success

Behind every major opportunity, however, there are moments of uncertainty.

Ahmed has spoken about having reservations when he was approached for Moon Knight. The production required extended periods outside Egypt, including time in Hungary and the United States.

For someone who had built a strong career within the Egyptian film industry, stepping into a massive international production meant leaving behind familiar surroundings and entering an entirely different working environment.

There was also the concern of maintaining his professional connection with Egypt while spending so much time abroad.

Instead of allowing those concerns to define the experience, Ahmed used the opportunity to learn.

Working alongside international teams exposed him to new production methods, workflows and creative perspectives. The experience ultimately became another stage in his professional growth.

Story Studio Marks a New Chapter

After more than two decades in the industry, Ahmed moved beyond being an editor and took on another role, that of founder.

In 2025, he launched Story Studio in Cairo, a post production company designed to bring high end technical and creative services together under one roof.

The venture represents a natural progression in Ahmed’s career.

Having worked on projects of different scales, he had seen the challenges filmmakers face during post production. Story Studio was created to address some of those challenges by providing services including 4K editing, HDR color grading, theatrical sound mixing with Dolby Atmos and visual effects.

The ambition is not only to provide technical facilities.

Story Studio is also positioned as a collaborative environment where emerging filmmakers and creative professionals can develop their projects and gain access to professional post production capabilities.

In that sense, Ahmed is moving from shaping individual films to helping shape the environment in which future films can be created.

Supporting the Next Generation of Storytellers

One of the most interesting aspects of Ahmed’s latest chapter is his focus on emerging talent.

Throughout his career, he has collaborated with established filmmakers as well as first time directors and independent voices.

That experience appears to have influenced his vision for Story Studio.

The goal is to create a place where filmmakers can take an idea and develop it into a finished visual product without compromising on creative ambition or technical quality.

For a filmmaker working in the region, access to sophisticated post production can make a major difference. Story Studio aims to make that process more accessible while helping regional productions meet international standards.

Ahmed’s experience gives the venture an important foundation because he understands the creative process from inside the editing room.

Awards Built on Craft and Consistency

Ahmed’s career has earned him more than 25 local and international accolades across his body of work, with recognition from festivals and cinema organizations in Egypt and abroad.

He has also become a member of the American Cinema Editors Society and has served as a jury member at the Cairo International Film Festival.

These achievements are important, but they represent only one part of his professional journey.

The more revealing story is the consistency behind them.

Ahmed entered the industry as a young enthusiast, adapted as editing technology changed, worked across commercials and music videos, moved into feature films, collaborated with major Egyptian directors, entered international productions and eventually created a post production company of his own.

Today, Ahmed’s work represents more than the technical craft of editing.
