From Different Cultures to a New Vision for Jewelry
Ana Lino did not begin her journey with the idea of simply creating beautiful jewelry. Her path was shaped by different countries, cultures and experiences that gradually taught her something important about the objects people choose to keep close to them. Growing up between Portugal and Spain and later studying in the United Kingdom, Ana developed an appreciation for stories that travel across generations.
That understanding became central to her work at Zamani Jewelry, a UAE based fine jewelry brand she co-founded with Stewart Kirkham in 2021. Today, as Managing Director, Ana is helping build a distinctive brand around an unusual idea. Jewelry can be more than decoration. It can become a personal connection to history.
The concept behind Zamani is simple but powerful. Ancient coins and artifacts have already lived through centuries of human history. Instead of leaving them locked away as objects of collection, the brand gives them another life through contemporary jewelry.
For Ana, this approach creates a different relationship between the wearer and the piece. A person is not simply buying a necklace, ring or bracelet. They are choosing to carry part of a much older story into their own life.
Building a Brand Around Objects That Have Already Lived
Every ancient coin carries evidence of another time. It may have passed through markets, communities and borders long before modern countries existed. It may have been held by people whose names have disappeared from history. Eventually, after centuries underground or inside collections, it can arrive at the Zamani studio and begin another chapter.
This is where Ana’s creative vision becomes important.
Rather than allowing the jewelry setting to overpower the artifact, she approaches the design as a way of framing history. The ancient object remains the central character, while the contemporary craftsmanship gives it a new purpose.
Zamani works with authenticated artifacts from Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic history, along with other ancient objects such as rings, arrowheads and intaglios. Each creation is one of a kind and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
The result is jewelry that feels personal while remaining connected to a much larger human story.
Ana explains the philosophy behind her work through a simple idea: “The setting should protect the artifact without silencing its story.”
That belief can be seen in the way Zamani approaches its designs. Some rings can be flipped to reveal both faces of an ancient coin. Open bezels can allow the reverse side of a coin to remain visible. These details are not simply design features. They help the wearer experience more of the artifact itself.
When Ancient Artifacts Meet Contemporary Style
One of the challenges of working with ancient objects is making them feel relevant to modern life.
An artifact can be thousands of years old, but the person wearing it today may want something elegant, versatile and contemporary. Ana has learned to balance those two worlds.
Her work at Zamani is therefore not about making history look old. It is about allowing history to exist naturally within modern fashion and luxury.
The Gulf has played an important role in shaping that vision. Living and working in the region has exposed Ana to customers from different cultures and backgrounds, many of whom value symbolism, heritage and individuality.
This has influenced the brand’s design direction, particularly its interest in symbols and animals that can carry meaning across different cultures.
For the wearer, this creates an opportunity to choose jewelry based not only on appearance but also on the story behind it.
That is what makes the experience different. A modern luxury piece can be beautiful, but a piece connected to an ancient civilization can also become a conversation starter.
The Journey Behind Every One of a Kind Piece
Building Zamani has also required Ana to understand that creating a luxury brand takes patience.
Ancient artifacts cannot simply be produced whenever a collection requires them. Each object has its own history, condition and character. The design process must therefore begin with what exists rather than forcing an existing design onto a particular artifact.
This has taught Ana one of her most valuable professional lessons.
“Anything of real value takes time. An ancient coin spends centuries waiting before it finds its next owner, and building a brand, a friendship, or a career follows the same pattern.”
That philosophy reflects more than the age of the artifacts. It reflects Ana’s own journey as an entrepreneur.
Building a brand requires consistency, trust and the willingness to keep improving even when progress is not immediate. Her experience across several countries and three languages has also given her a broader understanding of people, communication and the different ways individuals connect with heritage.
Her proudest achievement remains co founding Zamani and developing it into a brand with registered trademarks in the UAE and the United States.
A New Chapter for Clients With Their Own History
Ana’s vision for Zamani is now entering another interesting stage.
One of her current focuses is expanding the brand’s presence across the Gulf while reaching more people who want to wear something connected to history. But she is also opening the door for clients to bring their own stories into the creative process.
Zamani is introducing a commissioning service that allows clients to bring their own ancient coins and work with the brand to create a setting around them.
This could transform the meaning of bespoke jewelry.
Instead of beginning with a choice from a collection, the process begins with something the client already owns. The coin may have been collected during a journey, inherited from family or purchased because of its historical significance.
Ana and the Zamani team can then develop a contemporary setting designed around that particular artifact.
It is a natural extension of the philosophy that has guided the brand from the beginning. The history comes first. The jewelry gives that history a new life.
Looking Ahead Across the Gulf and Beyond
Ana now sees a future in which Zamani becomes a name associated with wearing history.
Her ambitions extend beyond the Gulf. While strengthening the brand’s presence across the region remains an important priority, she also hopes to open new doors in Europe and introduce the concept to more clients around the world.
The larger goal is not simply to sell more jewelry. It is to change how people think about what jewelry can represent.
A necklace can become a memory. A ring can become a family heirloom. An ancient coin can move from being an artifact in a collection to becoming something that is worn, admired and eventually passed to another generation.
That sense of continuity is at the heart of Ana’s work.
For someone who grew up between cultures and built a career across countries, languages and industries, the idea feels deeply personal. History has always moved across borders, and now Ana wants Zamani’s jewelry to do the same.
Her journey demonstrates that luxury does not always have to be about something new. Sometimes the most meaningful luxury comes from discovering something incredibly old and finding a way to make it relevant again.
Through Zamani Jewelry, Ana Lino is creating that connection one artifact at a time. Each piece begins with a story that existed long before the brand, and each wearer has the opportunity to continue that story.
In the years ahead, her vision is clear. She wants more people to experience the feeling of carrying history with them, not as something distant or untouchable, but as something personal enough to wear every day and meaningful enough to pass on.
