Turns Adversity Into Award Winning Musical Journey

Music has the power to transform lives, but for Chellcy Reitsma, it became something even greater. It became the path that helped her rebuild her future after losing the career she had spent decades creating. Today, the Dutch American artist based in Malta is preparing for one of the biggest milestones of her career with the upcoming release of her third studio album Home, a new record label partnership, and growing recognition within the international music industry.

Her story is not simply about releasing songs or performing on stage. It is about resilience, reinvention, and refusing to let life’s hardest moments define the future. From an accomplished dancer to an award winning singer songwriter, Chellcy Reitsma continues to prove that passion can create new opportunities even when everything seems lost.

A New Album Marks An Exciting Career Chapter

Chellcy Reitsma is currently preparing to release her third studio album, Home, a deeply anticipated project produced in Nashville. The album reflects not only her musical growth but also her evolving artistic identity.

The project features collaborations with respected musicians, including Nashville guitarist Pat Bergeson, known for his work with Peter Frampton, alongside acclaimed Maltese guitarist Ben Bailey. Bringing together experienced artists from different musical backgrounds has helped shape an album that combines Americana, blues, rock, and heartfelt storytelling into a distinctive sound.

Adding even more excitement to this chapter, Reitsma recently signed her first record deal with Sweden based Rexius Records, which will officially release Home in 2027. The signing represents a significant milestone after years of independently building her career and audience.

Even before Home reaches listeners, Reitsma has already begun writing her fourth album, demonstrating a creative momentum that continues to grow.

From California To Europe Through The Arts

Born in California with Dutch heritage, Chellcy Reitsma holds dual citizenship in both the United States and Malta. Creativity surrounded her from an early age, shaping a lifelong passion for artistic expression.

As a child she immersed herself in dance and visual arts before moving to Florence, Italy, on her twenty first birthday to study art. Her educational journey later continued in Northern California, where she studied art, art history, dance, and gallery practices at Humboldt State University.

Determined to keep expanding her knowledge, she moved once again to attend the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, one of America’s leading art institutions.

Throughout those years, dance remained at the center of her life. She joined professional performing companies specializing in Latin street dance along with Egyptian and folkloric dance, steadily establishing herself as both a performer and educator.

Her growing success eventually led her to establish her own dance company, allowing her to tour internationally as a choreographer, instructor, and performer across North America and Europe.

Falling In Love With Malta

One destination unexpectedly changed the direction of her life forever.

In 2005, Malta became one of the stops during one of her dance tours. The island immediately captured her heart.

She continued returning each year to teach workshops, choreograph performances, and connect with the local dance community. By 2007, she had expanded her dance company by opening a second branch in Malta.

Several years later, she made an even bigger decision.

In 2012, Reitsma sold everything she owned in Chicago and permanently relocated to Malta, embracing a completely new chapter both personally and professionally.

Career Ending Injuries Became A Turning Point

Just when life appeared to be moving exactly as planned, everything changed.

In 2013, a severe ankle injury forced Reitsma into a wheelchair for more than a year. After months of recovery, she briefly returned to dancing in 2014, only to suffer devastating injuries to both ankles and her feet once again.

The second setback left her wheelchair bound for another extended period.

The injuries affected every part of her life. Even painting, another lifelong passion, became physically impossible because sitting at an easel caused unbearable pain.

For someone whose identity had always been connected to movement, performance, and creativity, the emotional impact was overwhelming.

Instead of giving up, however, she searched for another way to express herself.

Finding A New Voice Through Songwriting

During recovery in 2015, Reitsma began writing songs and taking vocal coaching lessons.

What initially started as a creative outlet soon revealed an entirely new talent.

Songwriting gave her hope during one of the darkest periods of her life. Rather than focusing on what she had lost, she began building something entirely new.

In 2016, she released her debut single Blue, marking the beginning of her professional music career.

Since then, her catalogue has steadily expanded with albums and singles that blend poetic lyrics with influences from blues, rock, Americana, and alternative music. Her work has earned recognition for its emotional honesty and artistic originality. Her album Carpe Diem further strengthened her growing international profile, while her music has received multiple awards and recognition within independent music circles.

Growing Recognition On The International Stage

Today, Reitsma’s career extends well beyond independent music releases.

She recently became a Voting Member of the Recording Academy, placing her among music professionals who help determine future Grammy Award winners. She has also shared that her album Carpe Diem is being considered during the 2026 and 2027 Grammy season. Recording Academy Voting Members are professional creators who participate in the Grammy voting process, while submitted works undergo eligibility review before nominations are determined.

Her achievements reflect years of persistence and dedication rather than overnight success.

For Reitsma, every recognition represents another reminder that rebuilding a career is possible regardless of how difficult the journey may seem.

Looking Ahead With Bigger Dreams

While preparing for Home, Chellcy Reitsma is already planning for the future.

She hopes to perform at more festivals, expand her international touring schedule, and organize a dedicated tour celebrating the album’s release in 2027.

Another dream remains firmly in sight.

She continues working toward one day becoming an official Grammy nominee, a goal that reflects both her artistic ambition and belief in continuous growth.

Her story has already demonstrated that determination often creates opportunities where none appear to exist.

A Message That Inspires Beyond Music

Beyond albums and performances, Reitsma hopes her journey encourages others facing unexpected setbacks.

Her message is simple but powerful.

Life rarely unfolds exactly as planned. Dreams can change overnight through circumstances completely outside our control. Yet every ending also creates the possibility for a new beginning.

After transforming from an internationally touring dancer into an award winning singer songwriter, Chellcy Reitsma has become living proof that reinvention is possible at any stage of life.

As Home prepares for release and her musical career continues to reach new audiences around the world, her journey stands as an inspiring reminder that resilience, creativity, and adaptability can turn even life’s greatest challenges into remarkable opportunities.
