Hooman Tavakolian belongs to the second category.
His journey has crossed several seemingly different worlds, from wrestling and coaching to financial services, sports diplomacy, philanthropy and youth development. Yet behind every chapter is a consistent idea: success becomes more meaningful when it creates opportunities for others.
Hooman’s story began after his family moved from Tehran to New York. Growing up in difficult circumstances, he found wrestling at a time when discipline, community and purpose mattered deeply. The sport eventually became much more than an athletic pursuit. It became a foundation for how he approached challenges throughout his life.
He went on to wrestle at Hofstra University and Hunter College, later serving as an assistant coach at Hunter College. He also became a two time Veterans National Champion and was inducted into the Downstate New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2017.
But perhaps the most important lesson wrestling gave Hooman was not how to win.
It taught him how to keep going.
When Wrestling Became a Language for Connection
For Hooman, wrestling eventually moved beyond competition.
It became a way to connect people.
His involvement in international wrestling relationships, particularly between the United States and Iran, placed him in a unique position where sport could become a bridge between communities separated by politics, geography and history.
Through sports diplomacy, Hooman demonstrated that athletes can sometimes communicate where traditional institutions struggle. A wrestling mat does not require people to share the same political beliefs. It requires respect, preparation and the willingness to compete with integrity.
His work has included relationships with international wrestling federations and teams, while his strategic consulting work through Tavak Partners has focused on using sport to bridge gaps between nations. His involvement has extended to countries including Iran, Brazil, Bulgaria and Romania.
That approach earned him recognition beyond wrestling itself. In 2017, he was a nominee for Peace and Sport’s Diplomatic Action of the Year award.
For Hooman, however, the real achievement appears to be the relationships created along the way.
Building a Career Where Finance Meets Discipline
Away from the wrestling mat, Hooman operates in a completely different environment.
He has built a career in global financial services and compliance, serving as a Chief Compliance Officer at a hedge fund. His professional responsibilities involve governance, accountability, judgment and managing risk.
At first glance, finance and wrestling may seem worlds apart.
For Hooman, they are not.
Both demand preparation. Both require people to perform under pressure. Both expose weaknesses quickly. Most importantly, both demand accountability.
The wrestling mat taught him to understand consequences in real time. Finance taught him to understand the importance of structure, responsibility and long term thinking.
Together, these experiences have helped shape a leadership style that is less about authority and more about responsibility.
His career demonstrates that professional success does not have to exist separately from personal values.
Hoomanities Turns Personal Success Into Public Service
The clearest expression of Hooman’s philosophy can be found through Hoomanities, the nonprofit organization he founded to support youth, sports and humanitarian initiatives.
The organization reflects his belief that sport can be a powerful tool for empowerment. Its work has included providing wrestling equipment and supporting communities where young athletes face significant challenges.
One of the most notable examples came after the 2018 attack on the Maiwand Wrestling Club in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Instead of viewing the tragedy as something distant, Hooman and Hoomanities responded by helping raise support to rebuild the wrestling facility and provide equipment and assistance to affected families. The initiative showed how a sports community could respond to violence with something completely different: rebuilding, solidarity and hope.
That philosophy has become central to Hooman’s work.
He does not see wrestling simply as a competition.
He sees it as an opportunity to give young people structure, confidence, community and a reason to believe in their future.
Creating Opportunities Through Education
Hooman’s commitment to young people extends beyond sport.
In 2011, he and Lorelei Martin-Tavakolian, with support from Jon Tush, created the Become Your Own Dream Scholarship Fund. The scholarship was designed to help New York City student athletes who had faced hardship and wanted to continue wrestling while pursuing higher education. The fund later partnered with Beat the Streets New York.
The idea behind the scholarship is deeply connected to Hooman’s own experience.
He understands what it means to have ambition without unlimited resources.
Rather than simply telling young people to dream bigger, the initiative attempts to provide practical support that can help make those dreams possible.
That distinction matters.
Inspiration can motivate someone for a moment. Opportunity can change the direction of an entire life.
Hooman has chosen to focus on the latter.
A Growing Commitment to Women and Global Sports
Another important dimension of Hooman’s work is his focus on gender equality and opportunities for female athletes.
Through his professional and nonprofit activities, he has advocated for the advancement of women in sports, including athletes from the Middle East and other communities where access to opportunity can be limited.
His work has included support for Muslim female wrestlers through donations of sports bras and Nike Pro Hijabs, reflecting a broader belief that athletic participation should not be restricted by barriers that can be addressed through community support.
For Hooman, empowering athletes means looking beyond medals.
It means asking who has access to the mat in the first place.
A New Responsibility With USA Wrestling
In 2025, Hooman took on another significant role when USA Wrestling welcomed him as a steward of the Living the Dream Medal Fund.
The fund provides financial bonuses to U.S. World and Olympic medalists, and Hooman’s appointment added another layer to his involvement in the sport he has spent decades supporting.
The position also reflects the trust Hooman has earned within the wrestling community.
He is no longer simply an athlete who once competed.
He is now someone helping shape the environment around athletes and contributing to the systems that support them.
That evolution says a great deal about his understanding of leadership.
Grit and Gratitude as a Leadership Philosophy
Two words repeatedly emerge when looking at Hooman’s journey: grit and gratitude.
Grit explains the willingness to continue when circumstances become difficult.
Gratitude explains the desire to give something back after reaching a position of influence.
Together, they form a philosophy that feels particularly relevant in an era when professional success is often reduced to visibility, titles and personal branding.
Hooman’s story offers another interpretation.
Leadership is not simply about reaching the top.
It is about remembering what the climb taught you and using what you gained to help someone else climb.
That mindset can be seen throughout his work, from scholarships and wrestling initiatives to sports diplomacy and humanitarian projects.
The Legacy Hooman Tavakolian Is Building
Hooman Tavakolian’s career is difficult to place inside a single category.
He is an accomplished wrestler, coach, financial executive, sports diplomat, consultant and philanthropist. But listing those titles does not fully explain his impact.
The more interesting story is how those worlds connect.
Wrestling taught him resilience.
Finance taught him responsibility.
Diplomacy taught him the power of relationships.
Philanthropy gave those lessons a larger purpose.
Education showed him that opportunity can change a person’s trajectory.
And youth development continues to remind him that the next generation does not need perfect circumstances to succeed. Sometimes, they simply need someone willing to open a door.
That is ultimately what makes Hooman’s journey distinctive.
He has not treated success as a destination.
He has treated it as a responsibility.
A championship may celebrate one athlete. A scholarship can influence an entire future. A rebuilt wrestling club can restore hope to a community. A diplomatic relationship can create understanding across borders.
These are the moments that turn achievement into impact.
And as Hooman continues to move between finance, wrestling, philanthropy and international sports, his greatest contribution may be the connections he creates between them.
His story is a reminder that leadership is not defined only by where someone arrives.
It is defined by what they choose to do once they get there.
