Journey From Law Student to Tech Entrepreneur

For Sharon Ourian, entrepreneurship did not begin with a grand business plan or a carefully designed startup strategy. It began with an ordinary family moment that revealed an extraordinary opportunity.

While studying at UCLA School of Law and working at TestMasters, Ourian was already developing an interest in the possibilities of technology. She was seeing how education could move beyond traditional classrooms and become more flexible, accessible and convenient.

Then her mother received a traffic ticket.

Her mother wished she could complete traffic school from home rather than spend hours attending a physical class. For Ourian, the comment was more than a passing observation. It raised a bigger question. If education was required, why could it not be delivered in a way that worked around people’s lives?

That question became the foundation for what would become a decades long entrepreneurial journey.

A Simple Idea That Challenged An Entire System

In 2000, Ourian founded CyberActive and began developing a technology platform for online traffic education. At the time, traffic school was largely associated with physical classrooms, making the idea of completing the process online both unfamiliar and challenging.

The technology itself was only one part of the challenge.

Ourian also had to work with courts, judges, lawmakers and regulators to demonstrate that online education could meet the standards expected from traditional programs. She was not simply creating a website. She was helping establish trust in an entirely different model of delivering regulated education.

That experience became an important theme throughout her career. Innovation, she learned, is rarely just about creating something new. It is also about helping people understand why the new approach can work.

CyberActive eventually expanded beyond its original concept, developing into an education technology platform supporting consumer programs as well as white label and integrated education solutions for courts, government agencies, school districts, driving schools and private organizations. The company now describes its platform as supporting education across areas including traffic safety, real estate, OSHA, mortgage and notary education.

Learning That Progress Matters More Than Perfection

The road from an early startup idea to a scalable company also changed Ourian as a leader.

One of her most important lessons came from recognizing that perfection can become an obstacle when it prevents progress.

Early in her career, she wanted to control too many details because quality mattered deeply to her. Over time, she realized that sustainable growth requires a different kind of leadership.

A company cannot scale around one person’s ability to oversee everything.

It needs talented people, strong training, trust and ownership.

That shift allowed Ourian to move from being the person responsible for every decision to becoming a leader capable of building teams and systems that could continue moving forward without constant intervention.

Ourian’s career has also been shaped by circumstances that could easily have disrupted a growing company.

Regulatory requirements created barriers. Technology continued changing. Then the COVID period dramatically altered how education and driving schools operated.

Instead of treating these disruptions only as threats, Ourian and her team looked for ways to adapt.

CyberActive’s existing online infrastructure became particularly valuable when traditional driving schools faced classroom closures. The company was able to support organizations that needed to continue providing education in a digital environment. Public profiles of Ourian’s work note that CyberActive’s approved online courses and partnerships helped schools and driver education programs continue operating during the pandemic.

The experience reinforced one of Ourian’s strongest beliefs about entrepreneurship. Persistence does not mean following the same path regardless of circumstances. It means staying committed to the destination while being willing to change the route.

Sharon Ourian Building Technology That Makes Complex Systems Simpler

Today, Ourian’s vision reaches well beyond traffic education.

Her focus remains centered on a problem that has followed her throughout her career: complicated systems often become unnecessarily difficult for the people expected to use them.

Ourian’s experience managing a diversified real estate portfolio exposed her to another problem.

Rather than accepting that fragmentation, Ourian began looking for a better solution.

When existing platforms failed to address the operational challenges she was experiencing, the problem became an opportunity to build something new.

That led to MELKpm, an AI driven property management platform co founded by Ourian and Yasmine Kavandi. The platform is designed to bring property operations and financial visibility together for residential, commercial and mixed use portfolios.

The concept reflects a natural progression in Ourian’s career. Once again, she encountered a complicated system, identified where people were losing time and visibility, and began building technology around the problem.

MELKpm is being developed with AI powered workflows and integration with the Intuit accounting ecosystem, with the aim of giving property owners and operators greater visibility while reducing manual administrative work.

A New Chapter In AI And Business Technology

Ourian’s work with Intuit has also added another dimension to her technology journey.

As an operator managing complex businesses and multiple entities, she worked closely with Intuit teams and became a founding member of Intuit Lighthouse, a customer group that works directly with company leaders and product teams. She has also participated in discussions around AI capabilities and the needs of complex businesses.

That experience has strengthened her belief that the future of business technology will be increasingly intelligent, integrated and personalized.

For MELKpm, this means using AI not simply as a feature, but as part of the operating structure of property management. The goal is to help owners spend less time searching for information and managing repetitive processes and more time making decisions that create value.

Success That Extends Beyond Business

Behind the companies and technology is another part of Ourian’s story that she considers deeply meaningful.

Raising three children while continuing to build companies has been one of her most significant personal achievements. Her definition of success is therefore broader than revenue, awards or corporate milestones.

It is about creating systems that last.

It is about opening doors that were previously closed.

It is about making complicated experiences simpler for other people.

And it is about creating enough opportunity for others to grow alongside her.
