Maryam Pirband has built her career around stories that refuse to stay within boundaries. From beginning her journey in Iran to establishing herself internationally as a director, writer and producer, her path has been shaped by risk, resilience and an unmistakable belief in the power of cinema.

For Maryam, filmmaking has never been only about creating something to watch. Her work is deeply connected to people, identity, social justice and the strength it takes to survive difficult circumstances. Maryam’s relationship with cinema began in Iran, initially as an actress. But while performing in front of the camera, she was also entering an area where very few women had established a professional presence.

She became the first professional female stunt performer in Iran, an experience that would eventually influence the filmmaker she would become. Working closely with professional German action team leader Peyman Abadi gave her the opportunity to understand action from the inside. She learned about discipline, physical performance, choreography and the visual language required to make action meaningful on screen.

That experience did more than teach her technical skills. It gave Maryam a different understanding of what a director could do.

While working as an actress, people around her began recognizing that her strongest instincts were perhaps behind the camera. Their encouragement pushed her toward directing school, after which she spent years working as a first assistant director and script supervisor.

It was a gradual process, but it gave her something valuable. She learned filmmaking from the ground up.

Breaking Into Action Cinema as a Woman

Becoming a director was not an easy decision, particularly in an environment where women faced significant barriers in the film industry. Maryam nevertheless continued moving forward.

Her first short film was an action project, a choice that immediately reflected the unusual path she was taking. Its success brought attention to her work and helped establish her credibility as a filmmaker.

Her second short film was produced by a prominent Iranian producer and gave her the opportunity to work alongside established names in the industry. The project eventually reached the Cannes Film Festival’s Short Film Corner, marking an important moment in a career that would increasingly move beyond national borders.

Her background as a stunt performer and action director became an important part of her creative identity. Instead of treating action simply as spectacle, Maryam understood the physical and emotional demands behind it.

Moving from Iran to the United States was another defining chapter in Maryam’s life.

Immigration meant leaving behind familiarity and rebuilding a professional identity in a new country. She made that transition independently, carrying her experience, education and ambitions with her.

Los Angeles became a new chapter, but not a final destination.

Her international career eventually took her across different creative environments and languages. She directed Vertical, an action adventure horror feature filmed in Mexico, entering a demanding production environment that required her to work across cultures and languages.

The experience demonstrated how far her journey had traveled from its beginnings in Iran. She was no longer simply navigating a difficult industry as a woman. She was directing international action cinema in environments far removed from where her career had started.

That evolution is perhaps one of the strongest elements of her story.

Recognition That Became a Responsibility

Over the years, Maryam’s work has received extensive international recognition, with her projects earning awards and selections at festivals around the world.

Her films have been presented through international festival platforms, while projects such as Dandelion Season and Fermysk brought recognition for directing, social impact and female filmmaking.

Yet Maryam does not describe her greatest achievement as a particular award.

For her, the real achievement is the journey itself.

She began as a woman trying to find her place in an industry while facing opposition and uncertainty. She later moved to another country with little more than determination and rebuilt her career. She continued directing, studying and creating while adapting to new cultures and languages.

That distinction reveals the deeper purpose behind her career. Having spent years creating opportunities for herself, she now wants to help create an environment where others can find opportunities more easily.

Maryam’s latest chapter continues to combine cinema with a broader vision of impact.

Her action feature The Blue Phoenix is in the final stages of post production, adding another international project to a career already defined by movement between countries, genres and creative cultures.

But the film is only one part of what comes next.

Maryam is also continuing her academic journey, building on her education in film directing and screenwriting while pursuing doctoral studies in Philosophy, Art and Critical Thought. This combination of practical filmmaking and philosophical inquiry reflects the way she sees her profession.

Cinema allows her to create stories.

Education allows her to question them.

Life allows her to experience them.

Together, these elements have shaped a filmmaker who continues to evolve rather than settle into one definition.

Finding Her Own Creative Fingerprint

Perhaps the most powerful lesson from Maryam’s journey is her belief that success begins with discovering who you really are.

She believes every individual has a unique creative and personal fingerprint. The challenge is to discover it instead of spending life trying to imitate somebody else.

For a filmmaker, that idea becomes especially meaningful.

Cinema is ultimately about perspective. Two directors can receive the same script and create completely different films because they see the world differently.

Maryam’s perspective has been shaped by movement, adversity, physical action, immigration, education, cultural encounters and a lifelong curiosity about people.
