Redefining Success Beyond Revenue and Targets

A long corporate career can teach a person how to build businesses, manage teams and deliver results. But sometimes, the most important lessons begin when the pace finally slows down.

For Mohammed Salim Laher, that moment came after more than two decades in sales, commercial strategy, customer success and leadership across international businesses. His career had already taken him from early experiences in family businesses and door-to-door sales to Enterprise Rent-A-Car, mobility and travel, global commercial leadership and international teams.

Yet after years of constant professional movement, Mohammed reached a point where the next step was not simply about another position or another title. It was about taking time to pause, reflect and think carefully about what he wanted to build next.

That period of reflection has become an important part of his current journey. Today, he is bringing together more than 20 years of commercial experience with independent consulting, leadership development, customer value, mentoring and community contribution.

His story is therefore not only about what he achieved during his corporate career. It is also about what happened when he stepped back from the pace of corporate life and began considering what success should look like in the next chapter.

A Passion for Sales That Started Young

Mohammed’s interest in sales developed long before senior leadership positions became part of his career.

Growing up around family members who ran factories and shops, he would often help behind the counter, serving customers and making sales. Those early experiences introduced him to the practical side of business and showed him how important relationships are to commercial success.

He enjoyed interacting with people, understanding what they needed and turning conversations into opportunities.

Alongside his studies, he later took on door-to-door sales and customer service roles. These experiences taught him lessons that could not be learned entirely from a classroom.

Every customer was different. Every conversation required a different approach. Rejection was part of the process, and persistence mattered.

Those early lessons became the foundation for a professional journey that would eventually span more than two decades.

Building His Commercial Foundation at Enterprise

In 2004, Mohammed joined Enterprise Rent-A-Car as an intern.

What began as an internship became a significant chapter in his professional development. He later entered Enterprise’s Graduate Management Training Programme and spent more than ten years with the organisation, progressing through management responsibilities while developing experience in sales, customer service, profitability, operations, growth and people development.

Enterprise helped Mohammed understand that commercial performance cannot be separated from the wider organisation.

Customer experience influences loyalty. Team development influences results. Operational decisions affect profitability. Strong leadership requires understanding how all these elements work together.

His progression also became significant on a personal level. Mohammed eventually became part of the leadership team and was the first person from a minority background to hold that position.

The experience strengthened his belief in development, opportunity and the importance of creating pathways for people to progress.

More Than Two Decades of Commercial Leadership

Following Enterprise, Mohammed continued developing his experience across increasingly senior commercial roles.

His career has included sales, business development, account management, customer relationships, partnerships, customer success, commercial operations and international leadership.

A particularly important chapter came through his time with SIXT, where he spent nearly seven years before moving further into the travel industry.

Working across mobility and travel gave Mohammed exposure to different markets, customers and international teams. It also reinforced his understanding of the relationship between commercial performance, customer expectations and operational execution.

His later work with Blacklane expanded that international perspective further, involving global sales, strategic customer relationships, partnerships, team development and commercial growth.

Across these roles, one principle remained consistent: strong commercial performance is ultimately built around people.

Why Leadership Goes Beyond Targets

For Mohammed, sales numbers are only one part of the story.

A team can have ambitious targets, but sustainable performance requires the right people, structure, processes, accountability and leadership culture behind those targets.

Over the years, Mohammed has increasingly focused on developing people rather than simply managing performance.

He believes leaders should create future leaders, giving people the confidence, responsibility and support to eventually operate independently.

That philosophy has shaped his approach to coaching and team development. A leader cannot personally control every outcome as an organisation grows. The responsibility becomes creating an environment where capable people can make good decisions and deliver consistently.

His approach can be summed up through the image of a captain steering a ship. The captain sets the direction, but the journey depends on the entire team.

The Decision to Pause and Reflect

After years of corporate responsibility, Mohammed reached a point where he chose to step back.

For someone accustomed to targets, meetings, travel and constant professional movement, taking a pause created something that a busy corporate schedule rarely allows: space to think.

Rather than immediately moving into another position, he used the period to reflect on his experiences, his priorities and the direction he wanted his life and career to take.

The pause became more than a break from work.

It gave Mohammed an opportunity to become more present, reconnect with what mattered outside professional achievement and consider how his experience could be used differently in the future.

It also changed the way he viewed career progression.

After more than 20 years of building commercial experience, the question was no longer simply what role should come next. It was what kind of work would create the right combination of professional impact, personal purpose, family time and contribution.

Turning Experience Into Independent Consulting

That reflection has helped shape Mohammed’s current professional chapter.

Today, he is developing his own independent commercial consultancy, advising founders, business owners and leadership teams from global organisations around growth, sales, go-to-market strategy and commercial transformation.

The move allows him to take lessons gathered across more than two decades and apply them across different organisations.

Some businesses may have strong products but lack a clear commercial structure. Others may have ambitious growth plans without a practical go-to-market strategy. Growing organisations can also reach a stage where the methods that created early success are no longer sufficient for the next phase.

Mohammed’s role is to help leaders look at these challenges from both a strategic and practical perspective.

His experience comes from having worked inside businesses, managed teams, dealt with customers and navigated commercial challenges directly. That operating background allows him to connect strategy with execution rather than treating them as separate ideas.

Customer Value at the Centre

Another important part of Mohammed’s commercial philosophy is customer value.

Winning a customer is not necessarily the end of the commercial relationship. Long-term success depends on understanding whether customers continue to receive meaningful value.

His experience across sales and customer success has strengthened this perspective.

Strong commercial organisations listen to customers, understand their challenges and create solutions that address genuine needs. When customer relationships are approached this way, commercial growth becomes connected to trust and long-term value rather than simply individual transactions.

This thinking now informs his consulting work, particularly around commercial strategy, customer experience and sustainable growth.

Mohammed Salim Laher Success Beyond the Corporate World

The pause also encouraged Mohammed to look beyond traditional measures of professional success.

Family, health, community and personal relationships have become increasingly important parts of how he views the future.

His involvement in community and voluntary work reflects this wider perspective. His activities have included volunteering with Neurodiversity in Business, governance work within a school community and involvement with the Muslim Burial Council of Leicester.

These experiences have given another meaning to leadership.

In business, success can often be measured through revenue, growth and performance. In community work, the impact can be measured differently through time, support, responsibility and the opportunities created for others.

For Mohammed, both forms of contribution matter.

Building the Next Chapter With Purpose

Today, Mohammed is not starting his professional life again. He is taking everything he has learned and using it with greater intention.

His early experiences taught him the fundamentals of sales and relationships. Enterprise developed his commercial and management foundation. His years across mobility and travel expanded his international perspective. Senior leadership taught him the importance of people, customer value and execution.

The period of reflection added another lesson: professional growth does not always mean moving faster.

Sometimes it means slowing down enough to understand where you actually want to go.

That understanding is now shaping Mohammed’s next chapter.

He wants to grow his independent consultancy, support more businesses and leaders, continue developing people and contribute to his community. At the same time, he wants greater freedom to spend time with his family and enjoy the life built through years of professional effort.

For Mohammed Salim Laher, the next chapter is therefore not simply about another career milestone.

It is about using experience with greater purpose.

After more than two decades in commercial leadership, his corporate career has given him the knowledge to understand businesses. His decision to pause has given him the perspective to understand what he wants from the future.

Now, he is bringing both together.

His journey shows that reinvention does not always require starting again. Sometimes, it means taking everything learned along the way, stepping back long enough to see it clearly, and then using that experience to build something more aligned with the person you have become.
