Where Creativity Became the Beginning of Something New
For Claire Kanj, creativity has always been part of everyday life. Growing up surrounded by colours, textured papers, glitter and the world of design and printing, she developed an early appreciation for visual creativity and detail.
Her father played an important role in shaping that environment. Watching him bring ideas to life inspired Claire to pursue graphic design, giving her a creative foundation that would eventually lead her into an entirely different industry.
That unexpected journey began with a simple idea: to combine creativity with food and introduce people to marshmallows in a completely different way.
The result was Marsh’n’mallow, a gourmet marshmallow dessert concept created to transform a familiar sweet into a more creative and premium experience.
From a Home Experiment to a Business
The early days of Marsh’n’mallow were far from straightforward. Claire experimented from home, developing recipes, testing flavours and learning through countless trials.
Friends and family became some of her first customers and critics, allowing her to understand how people responded to the concept. Local markets then gave her the opportunity to meet customers directly, gather feedback and refine the products.
What started as an experiment gradually became a business.
Rather than treating marshmallows as a simple packaged sweet, Claire wanted Marsh’n’mallow to become an experience. The brand introduced different flavours, formats and creative combinations, including inspirations drawn from Gulf tastes.
The product range eventually expanded to more than 30 SKUs, demonstrating how a simple idea can evolve when creativity is combined with experimentation and customer feedback.
Turning an Idea Into a Recognised Brand
Several milestones helped establish Marsh’n’mallow beyond its beginnings as a homegrown concept.
Within its first year, the brand secured corporate orders from four major luxury brands, providing an important early indication that the concept could appeal to a wider market.
Claire also took Marsh’n’mallow to Shark Tank, giving the brand an opportunity to reach a much larger audience and showcase the story behind the business.
Another significant milestone came when Marsh’n’mallow became a winner of the Spinneys Local Business Incubator Program, creating another pathway for the brand to develop and move toward the retail market.
For Claire, these achievements represent more than business milestones. They reflect the transformation of an idea that once existed only in her imagination into a brand with a growing presence.
Where Design Meets Food
Claire’s background in graphic design continues to influence the way she approaches Marsh’n’mallow.
Her understanding of colour, presentation, identity and visual storytelling has become part of the brand’s personality. From the packaging and product presentation to the flavours and overall customer experience, creativity remains at the centre of what she builds.
This is what makes her entrepreneurial journey particularly distinctive. She did not leave her creative background behind when she entered the food industry. Instead, she found another canvas on which to use it.
Her experience has also taught her that entrepreneurship rarely comes with a perfect roadmap. There have been challenges, mistakes, unexpected setbacks and moments of uncertainty, but each experience has contributed to the brand’s development.
For Claire, progress comes from being willing to start, learn and keep moving.
Building a UAE Brand With Global Ambitions
Today, Claire’s vision extends beyond establishing Marsh’n’mallow as a successful UAE dessert brand.
She continues to explore new products and flavours while looking toward international expansion. Franchising is also part of the possibilities she is considering as the brand develops.
One of the most rewarding reactions she receives is when people ask whether Marsh’n’mallow is genuinely made in the UAE. For Claire, that response represents something meaningful: the creation of a distinctive, homegrown concept that people did not expect to see coming from the region.
Her ambition is to build on that identity and eventually take Marsh’n’mallow into international markets.
A Creative Idea Still Growing
Claire Kanj’s journey demonstrates what can happen when creativity is given the opportunity to become something tangible.
From growing up around design and printing to experimenting with marshmallows in her home, she transformed an unconventional idea into a growing food concept through persistence, experimentation and a willingness to learn.
Marsh’n’mallow is now more than a dessert brand. It represents Claire’s approach to entrepreneurship: take the idea seriously, start before everything is perfect, listen to customers, adapt and continue creating.
As she looks toward new products, expansion and international opportunities, Claire’s story is still evolving.
What began with creativity has become a business — and the next chapter could take that creativity much further.
